Some statistics related to web marketing in Asia(continue)

Upto 45% of daily actions are done by habit, without conscious thought. We don’t initially read the text on the page; we look for matches in the shape of the characters in the query.

Rather than people evaluate all results on the page at once, we first evaluate a single 3-4 items in chunk and move to the next if we don’t find a match. 50% of time, searchers click on results in the first chunk. This is one reason why a number one ranking is less important than people think. If you rank top 3-4 results and have the most compelling title and descriptions, you may win the click over the sites ranking above you.

60% of searchers rely primarily on the title of the result when evaluating whether the click. Searchers don’t even evaluate the entire title – they look primarily at the left half of it. The description displayed under the title and the URL also factor into what a searcher click on. Search engines bold words in all three places that match the query, which can draw a searcher’s attention.

55% of business to business buyers said they would navigate to a site they already knew through search. You can see this trend in the top search terms, nearly all are branded. IF a brand the searcher hadn’t previously considered shows up in results, it is added to a consideration and a brand not listed may be dropped from a consideration set.

When searchers were asked if they remembered seeing brands in the search results, fewer than 30% did if the brand was only in a paid search ad, but nearly 60% did when the bran appeared on top of both paid and organic. Only appear in organic can definitely causes more brand lift.

Seeing a company listed among the top results on a search engine makes me think that the company is a top one within its field. …

Views of online video opportunity continue to increase 41% from august 2008 to august 2009.

62 % of searchers click a result on the first page of results and 90% click within the first 3 pages. Data shows that the first page rankings are even more important, as 90% of clicks within that data set were on the first page of results.

Some statistics related to web marketing in Asia

88% of online search dollars are spent on paid search results, even though 85% of searchers click on organic results.

Many marketers spend money on online advertising, particularly paid search, but none of them started to take advantage of the 85% of clicks that organic search produces.

63% of search related purchases occur offline and for some categories, this number is higher.

In a webvisible / Nielson study, 82% of respondents said that they’ve used the internet to find the local business. 80% say they’ve researched a product / service online before buying it locally.

Only 44% of small business even have a web site and your website need to be visible in search engines whether you sell online or not.

Hitwise reported that paid search engine traffic to websites was down to 26%, yet organic search traffic was up.

iCrossing study found that when a brand appears in both the organic and paid results, the searcher clicked on that brand 92% of the time compared to 60% of clicks when appear in one location only.

Advertising death spiral – consumers filter out advertising because it’s not relevant to their current task. In turn, advertisers get louder, causing consumers to filter more and advertisers to yell even louder.

Study focused on differences in how men and women search found that “on average, men make decisions quicker, spend less time on sites, are more likely to have pre-established “favored” vendor sites that they use in the search process and show less resistance to sponsored listings. Women tended to be more deliberate in reading search results, spend more time with their searches and spend more time on sites before making decisions.

Blog Myths in Hong Kong

Some of my clients have told me that they were afraid to start a blog. Why do blogs inspire fear? Perhaps come of these myths have run through your mind:

1.      You need to be considered cool to write a blog.
Unless your prctice is built around a celebrity, readers are just hungry for solid information. You can gain a following by delivering great tips and new ideas.

2.      You’ll be run out of things to write about.
Like anything else, your interest will wax and wane depending on the topic your blog is covering. Ask your marketing and sales teams to volunteer topics that they are dealing with, and talk to customer service about the topic of the calls each week. Or you can feature an expert guest blogger on a hot topic to spice things up. Also, remember to create an editorial calendar like any good publisher and plan ahead. That way you’ve planned far enough ahead to ease your anxiety.

3.      It will take too much of your time.
Don’t accept that idea at face value. You need to take a look at the big picture of your business. Ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish and what marketing channels you are using, then evaluate the return for each of those marketing channels. If you’re continuing to do a newsletter without much return, perhaps you should consider a blog. If you’re spending too much on pay-per-click advertising without a return, maybe writing a blog and publishing an e-newsletter would be better. How you spend your time should be determined by what channels give you the best return.
